David Goldstein and the New York City based team at BrainBit have developed a new comb-like electrode sensor. The electrodes have balls on the ends and are springy for comfort. The flat prototype shows a circular arrangement of the sensors, while the headset has them arranged in parallel. They’re working on finalizing the design of the headset and plan to launch a crowdfunding campaign this year.
Alex Chang and the team at Looxid Labs have developed a headset that includes not only two EEG sensors, but also an eye-tracking sensor. They plan to make an early SDK available soon and run their crowdfunding campaign this year.
Another take on neurotech was this sleep mask. It promises to enhance your sleep with data from EEG, EOG, Pulse, Motion and Temperature sensors. They are already selling the mask for $299 and expect to ship new orders in 8 weeks.
BrainCo also had a new device. It’s a wrap-around band shape that stretches for bigger heads. The device has only two electrodes and it comes with a neuro-feedback application.
Here’s me and Joel from OpenBCI. The team just ran their second Kickstarter campaign, successfully raising $168k for their new 4-sensor board and a 3d printable headset. Their campaign also met their stretch goal, meaning they’ll be releasing a tDCS shield to add onto either of their boards.
Other startups I met hoping to get into the EEG device space include Neurable, and Melomind. foc.us was also there with a new $9 tDCS device which is essentially a 9V battery connected to an electrode. That scares me. Interaxon had a suite to showcase the Muse and its co-founder, Ariel Garten, spoke on a panel entitled ‘Mind-Blowing Wearables’. Finally, two other related technologies I thought were particularly interesting were Reach Bionics’s conductive thread EMG sensors for VR headsets, and the syntouch tactile sensor which can differentiate between materials more accurately than your fingertips.
